01 June 2022 - In order to build further the cooperation between the Philippines and Bangladesh in disaster cooperation, Ambassador Alan L. Deniega met with the officials of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on disaster management.

A meeting was held with Mr. Komori Takashi, Senior Representative of Human Development Section, and Mr. Naoki Matsumura, Country Programme Coordinator for Disaster Risk Reduction, as a followup to the disaster management event of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) in May, which was attended by the Bangladesh State Minister on disaster management and JICA.

Ambassador Deniega pointed out that both the Philippines and Bangladesh, along with Japan, are prone to natural disasters and have common experience in dealing with disasters, which include typhoons and flooding. Their experiences and technical expertise in managing natural disasters can be pooled as reference to help set up preventive measures and build regional resilience.

In this regard, JICA officials mentioned that the organization has contributed to the capacity-building of Bangladesh’s meteorological department and the construction of cyclone shelters in the country.

More meetings will be set up, while an agreement between the Philippines and Bangladesh on disaster cooperation is being drafted.
