The Philippines was among the first countries which extended its recognition of Bangladesh as a new state in February 1972, after Bangladesh got its independence from Pakistan.  Diplomatic relations were established on 24 February 1972.

On 6 September 1981, Chargé d’Affaires Rodrigo Aragon opened the resident embassy of the Philippines in Dhaka.  Months after, Bangladesh Embassy started its operation in Manila with Maj. Gen. Moinul Hussain Choudhury, Bir Bikram as the first appointed Bangladesh Ambassador to the Philippines.
