The Embassy, which was joined by the Philippine Honorary Consul in the Maldives (MPHC) Mr. Abdulla Salih, had proactive discussions with Maldives Immigration regarding migrant workers rights in the Maldives, as well as local labor laws and regulations that Filipinos must know before entering into service contracts with companies based in the Maldives. In order to raise awareness on the Maldives Immigration’s processes and requirements in relation to migrant workers, the Immigration officials expressed interest and willingness in collaborating with the Embassy with respect to the possible conduct of a seminar to be held this year focusing on migrant workers’ concerns in the Maldives. The Assistant Controllers also expressed openness to meeting with Philippine officials handling labor and migrant workers concerns in pursuit of closer cooperation and strengthened bilateral relations between the Philippines and the Maldives.

The Maldives has approximately 4,000 overseas Filipino workers according to the records of Maldives Immigration as of December 2017. END.
